In League of Legends, individual skill is crucial, but team composition has a significant impact on victory or defeat. A good team composition maximizes each champion's strengths, complements their weaknesses, and effectively counters the opposing team.
The fundamental element of a team composition is the balance between tanks, damage dealers, and supports. Tanks are the team's frontline, absorbing damage and threatening the enemy's core damage dealers by reaching them. Damage dealers are divided into physical damage dealers (AD) and magic damage dealers (AP), and appropriate placement of these makes it difficult for the opponent to select defensive items. Supports support the team with CC and utility.
Competitive styles also vary. Poking compositions, like those of Jayce, Nidalee, and Lux, use ranged abilities to erode enemy health and gain an advantage in fights. Initiating compositions, like those of Malphite, Orianna, and Amumu, use powerful area-of-effect CC to instantly decide fights. Split-pushing compositions, like those of Fiora and Tryndamere, pressure the side lanes and distract the enemy. Protecting compositions, like those of Lulu and Janna, thoroughly protect their ADCs and aim for the late game.
Synergy is also important. Yasuo pairs well with champions that can cast airborne spells, such as Nocturne, Malphite, and Gragas. Kalista offers powerful initiation alongside tanky supports like Alistar and Leona. Yuumi provides tremendous firepower support when paired with mobile damage dealers.
Counterpicks are also important to consider. If your opponent has a heavily assassin-heavy composition, prioritize tanks and shields. If your opponent has a large tank base , select champions that deal % health damage or fixed damage. Understanding and countering the core of your opponent's composition during the ban/pick phase is key to increasing your win rate.
